Description: ” You’re in a Bad Way ” is by Saint Etienne, the English alternative dance band from London, England. The group formed in 1990 and consists of Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs.
Former music journalists and childhood friends Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs had initially been planned to use different singers as the lead. Saint Etienne’s first Album, Foxbase Alpha, used this concept.
It was when they worked with Sarah Cracknell on ” Nothing Can Stop Us “, their third single released in 1991, that they made the decision to work with her on a permanent basis. Sarah Cracknell has written or co-written many of the band’s songs.
To date, Album releases by the group are nine studio, two soundtracks, nine compilation, two remixes, seven mixes and two video Albums. They have also released one box set, four extended plays, thirty-eight singles (including one as a featured artist), and five promotional singles. They are still active today playing concerts in the United Kingdom and Europe.
” You’re in a Bad Way ” was written by band members Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs. Production for the single was by Alan Tarney, the English songwriter, record producer and bass guitarist. Alan was born on the 19th of November 1945 in Workington, a town and port located at the mouth of the River Derwent on the west coast of Cumbria, England. He spent his teens growing up in Adelaide, the capital city of the state of South Australia.
In 1979, Alan’s career took off when he wrote and arranged ” We Don’t Talk Anymore ” for Cliff Richard. The song became a huge hit reaching number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in the United States and Number One in the United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Norway and Switzerland.
Soon after he became Richard’s record producer for his next two Albums, I’m No Hero in 1980 and Wired for Sound in 1981. At this time Alan also wrote and produced for Barbara Dickson and Leo Sayer, who had hit singles with ” January February ” and ” More Than I Can Say “. As a producer, he has worked with many artists including A-Ha, Pulp, Squeeze, The Dream Academy, The Lotus Eaters and David Cassidy.
” You’re in a Bad Way ” was released on the 1st of February 1993 by record labels Heavenly Recordings ( a London-based independent record label ) and Warner Bros ( Warner Music Group ). It features on Saint Etienne’s second studio Album, So Tough.
The Album, released on the 9th of March 1993, the Album cover had a photograph of lead singer Sarah Cracknell aged six, taken by her father, Derek. The Album’s title comes from Carl and the Passions – ” So Tough “, the 1972 Beach Boys Album, which reached number twenty-five in the UK and number fifty in the US.
The album used samples of dialogue between songs, and they were taken from a different of sources including British film and television. The group intended to use American movies, however, the cost of obtaining permission led them to use British samples.
Sources include the films Peeping Tom, Billy Liar, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Lord of the Flies and That’ll Be the Day. They also used the television series The Family and the 1958 stereo demonstration Album, A Journey into Stereophonic Sound.
So Tough entered the UK Albums Chart on the 6th of March 1993 and reached a peak of number seven. It spent one week in the Top Ten and a total of seven weeks on the chart.
” You’re in a Bad Way ” was written as a throwback to the pop music of the 1960s. During in an interview with the now-defunct British music newspaper, Melody Maker, band member Bob Stanley claimed that the song was written in just ten minutes in the style of Herman’s Hermits, the English beat rock band fronted by Peter Noone. In 2017 Peter reformed a group using the name Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone.
The song was initially to be the B-side to ” Everlasting “. However, the record company decided that it should be released as a single.
The lyrics refer Bruce Forsyth, and the British TV game shows The Generation Game with the lines ” watching Bruce on the old Generation Game. ”
The show, produced by the BBC, was based on Één van de acht (” One of the Eight “), a Dutch TV show which was created in 1969 by Theo Uittenbogaard for VARA Television, a Dutch public broadcasting association.
Bruce Forsyth presented the show from the first airing in 1971. He was one of the UK’s most popular entertainers, hosting several game shows including Play Your Cards Right, The Price Is Right, and You Bet!. He went on to co-present Strictly Come Dancing from 2004 to 2013. Bruce died on the 18th of August 2017.
” You’re in a Bad Way ” was a commercial success for Saint Etienne. In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 13th of February 1993 and reached a peak of number twelve. It spent two weeks in the Top Twenty and a total of five weeks on the UK chart.
